February 7th, 8:00 – 10:00am
Pillsbury Winthrop, Palo Alto

2011 was a confusing year, full of good and bad news. VCs invested roughly $26B, up from $23B in 2010, but VC fundraising was only roughly $14B, so the VCs invested $12B more than they raised in 2011 and $10B more than they raised in 2010, an unsustainable model. Three of the top 4 sectors in 2011 – cleantech, biotech, and medical devices – all face major obstacles and spark much skepticism from many investors. Roughly 50 VC backed companies went public in the US in 2011, down from 75 in 2010, a modest year from a historical perspective. The VC market is in disequilibrium…it cannot stay like this. Will 2012 be better, worse, or the same as 2011? Why are most companies using Pillsbury and PwC? Only our experts know! 30% off - Quarterly Venture Breakfast
February 7th, 8:00 – 10:00am
Pillsbury Winthrop, Palo Alto

2011 was a confusing year, full of good and bad news. Come hear the answers!  For more information, check out www.svforum.org/venture-breakfast-series and use code DATA12 for 30% off.

January 2012 Startup Events

Happy New Year!  Excited for 2012? I sure am!  I’m especially excited to hear what 50Kings has planned for this year. If you haven’t seen the Pictures from their Pirate War, they’re amazing. They even beached on Branson’s island.  For 2012 they’ve told me there will be only one multi-day retreat and they’ve chartered planes to get there. No details on the website though, but I hear they’re considering invites by referral only.  I’ll try to keep you posted.

A busy month for events, it is!  I found hundreds, but hear are some of the ones that stood out.

December 2011 Startup Events

Thank you for all of your support during my time of change.  It’s been really fun so far!  I’ve been helping out the SV IGDA as well as Concept Art House, picking up an intimidating pile of books to read (including Extreme Programming Explained and Challenges for Game Designers), and started a Javascript class on Udemy.  I will probably start looking for “real” work in late winter or early spring, just FYI…

We’re into the holiday season, where parties seem to be popping up every night.  I’ve listed some of those I’ve heard about ahead of time, but keep an eye on Plancast and Facebook for updates.  I’ve also got some neat holiday deals from some of our partners, so check below for those.

This may be my last newsletter of 2011, as I have a lot of holiday travel and it’s pretty quiet the last two weeks of December.  But I hope you have a wonderful new year!

Udemy Holiday Special
70% off How To Create an Awesome Demo Video

Videos Rule. If your company’s website doesn’t have them, you are missing out on an awesome way of communicating with your customers.  Unfortunately, many companies let the high costs of professional videos turn them off to the real power of this marketing medium. Some folks even create low quality videos in-house.  As dynamic and powerful as videos can be, bad videos can be just as persuasive… in a totally negative way.  Thankfully, Udemy’s put together this great holiday deal, giving you an incredible discount on this How To series for your demo video.  Check it out at http://www.udemy.com/deal/webwallflower-awesomedemovideos-nov282011.html

Winter Wonderland: Learn to Animate with CSS
December 7, 7:00 – 9:00p
Twitter (795 Folsom St – Suite 600)
Improved browser support of CSS3 has allowed us to build a richer web with visual treatments. But with great power comes great responsibility. Just because you can add a skewed animated rainbow with drop shadow to your site doesn’t mean you should. In this session we’ll look at what’s really cool in CSS3 by making snow with CSS3. We take a look at selectors, gradients, rounded corners, alpha-transparency, transitions and transforms, with a deeper dive into CSS3 animation. You’ll have to restrain yourself, though. Yes, we’ll cover transitions, transforms, keyframes and more. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Note that this is similar to the SVCC and OpenWebCamp presentation.  More information at http://www.meetup.com/cascadesf/events/36494052/

Mingle with students and young professionals who share an interest in global health. Hear about the work that the International Medical Health Organization (IMHO) does in Sri Lanka and beyond. Translate your own ideas into real impact overseas by working with the IMHO. More information at http://ideas2impact-parisoma.eventbrite.com/

November Startup Events

I recently met with a member of T3 Advisors, and he totally blew me away; I do not understand why EVERY growing startup isn’t using this. T3 Advisors is a totally new approach on helping startups find office space. Companies no longer can afford to be stagnant with their real estate strategy. Productivity, Collaboration, Recruiting and Retention are all directly influenced by office space. For the last 10 years T3 has been helping companies all across the country tackle these issues in a new and inventive way. If you want help with your company’s space and culture first download the “Move Handbook for Startups” and then shoot David an email, Bergeron@t3advisors.com – he’s who I met with and is wonderful to just sit and talk to about the state of the industry.  If you are or will soon be looking for office space, check them out!

HealthTech Breakfast
November 16th, 8:00a – 10:00a

On the one hand there is a shortage of nurses and primary care physicians, and on the other hand a ‘Silver Tsunami’ (78 million Baby Boomers started retiring in 2011) and 32 million currently uninsured consumers entering the healthcare market in the next few years. Can technology be a source of innovation to deal with this growing tension between supply and demand? What new business models are enabled? How does the rapid technology adoption by help or hurt? Can patients use technology and cloud-based solutions to take on some of the care traditionally performed by professionals? And how does technology impact the relationship between physicians and pharmaceutical companies? How do physicians deal with the ‘yelp-of-physicians’ phenomenon? Who delivers care how and where is in flux. This breakfast event will highlight core disruptive forces and areas of opportunity for entrepreneurs from outside and inside healthcare to make a difference in the future of health.  More information at www.svforum.org/healthseries
