April 2012 Startup Events
It seems that the most creative startup teams I know also happen to be the ones to get into the most legal trouble. The laws have become way too complicated in regards to creative works, and many teams simply don’t have the time to learn them. I recently learned about a Cogswell Seminar that can help out any founder working on a creative endeavor. On April 11th, 18th, and 25th, Cogswell is hosting a set of seminars on Creative Commons, creative licensing, and the legal issues you need to know. Can you use the likeness of a real person – say Bill Gates – in your Facebook Game? What if he was transformed into a half man/half worm creature? Depending on how you interpret IP, you might be on solid footing or you might be paying Gates a pretty penny.
To learn more about the legality of turning Bill Gates into a half work creature, or just how to share and protect your creative work, check out Cogswell College’s public lecture series, which is also totally free! Learn more at http://cogswellcollege.eventbrite.com/

PS: As many know, this month marks SXSW, the annual tech/music/film fest in Austin, TX that attracts over a hundred-thousand people from around the world. It also means that the Bay Area startup event scene tends to be a little quieter. So our list of events, while equally exciting, is a little shorter than usual.

30% off Quarterly Venture Breakfast
February 7th, 8:00 – 10:00am
Pillsbury Winthrop, Palo Alto
2011 was a confusing year, full of good and bad news. VCs invested roughly $26B, up from $23B in 2010, but VC fundraising was only roughly $14B, so the VCs invested $12B more than they raised in 2011 and $10B more than they raised in 2010, an unsustainable model. Three of the top 4 sectors in 2011 – cleantech, biotech, and medical devices – all face major obstacles and spark much skepticism from many investors. Roughly 50 VC backed companies went public in the US in 2011, down from 75 in 2010, a modest year from a historical perspective. The VC market is in disequilibrium…it cannot stay like this. Will 2012 be better, worse, or the same as 2011? Why are most companies using Pillsbury and PwC? Only our experts know! Come hear the answers! For more information, check out www.svforum.org/venture-breakfast-series and use code DATA12 for 30% off.

30% off - Quarterly Venture Breakfast

Happy New Year! Excited for 2012? I sure am! I’m especially excited to hear what 50Kings has planned for this year. If you haven’t seen the Pictures from their Pirate War, they’re amazing. They even beached on Branson’s island. For 2012 they’ve told me there will be only one multi-day retreat and they’ve chartered planes to get there. No details on the website though, but I hear they’re considering invites by referral only. I’ll try to keep you posted.
A busy month for events, it is! I found hundreds, but hear are some of the ones that stood out.
